Synergistic retrievals of leaf area index and soil moisture from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2

Joint retrieval of vegetation status from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical data holds much promise due to the complimentary information in two wavelength domains. SAR penetrates canopy includes about water soil vegetation, whereas contains amount health leaves. However, inherent complexities combining these sources there has been relatively little progress joint over canopies. In this study, Sentinel–1 Sentinel–2 were used invert coupled radiative transfer models provide synergistic retrievals leaf area index moisture. Results for are excellent enhanced by use both (RSME is always less than 0.5 a correlation better 0.95 when using together), but results moisture mixed with generally showing lowest RMSE underestimating variability field data. Examples such plant properties physically based uncommon literature, highlight potential approach.
